Learning through Play - Really??

What do you think of when you hear the word "play"? For some people, it is synonymous with a frivolous activity.  But, when I think of PLAY, I know that it as the absolute best way for a young child to learn.  As a former elementary school teacher, I know the qualities that make students successful.  We teach these qualities in preschool through rich play experiences.  Allow me to illustrate my point!

  1. Jamie what a powerful post! I sure hope your words are taken to heart...'play' is often thought of as 'slacking off' yet the time spent in play often outweighs the benefits of a structured lesson for our tiniest learners! Thank you for showing how important play is!!

    1. Thank you so much, Jenn! I am very passionate about the importance of play, and you're right that it sometimes gets a bad rap because people might not understand what it means. I appreciate your comment.

  2. I heartily agree. I love the connections you've made. As a Pre-K teacher, I sometimes feel I need to justify the "play" that goes on in my classroom every day. Your words and pictures make it easier to do that. Thank you!

    1. Thank you so much Deanna! We (Pre-K) teachers need to keep speaking the truth about play until no one questions its importance. Thanks for your comment!

    1. Thank you so much! I really believe that part of our job as teachers is to educate administrators, parents, and the public about what is best for our children. Teachers are the experts. I appreciate your comment!

  5. EXCELLENT! My program is play-based & I intend to keep it that way. Preschoolers don't need dittos! They need to experience the world around them through PLAY!

  6. Wow, great points! And your use of photos really make your points all the more powerful. I fully agree with you. I taught 1st and 2nd grade for six years, and now am teaching pre-K. Going backwards in the grades really is an eye opener to all the more important, natural things that should happen before formal school type instruction. Just wish everyone was one the same page. Let the little ones PLAY!

    1. I know what you mean about going backwards... I moved from 2nd grade to 2.5-year-olds when I opened my preschool! It was very eye-opening!! Thanks for your comment, and I hope you have a wonderful school year playing with your little ones.
