Winter is SNOW much FUN!

Winter is upon us and so are some fun activities!! I'm all about having fun while learning, so I'm super excited to dig into my winter products. I just didn't even realize how many winter packs I had until my friends and I decided to do a mini winter promotion today! From write the room and sight word games to graphic organizers and writing to print & go and math task cards - the winter fun is endless!!

winter writing
We used my winter tree maps and winter writing pack to write all about reindeer in December. Both of these packs contain lots of winter writing topics to help your little learners with their writing skills in January and all winter long!

winter writing
My teammate likes using the snowman bubble map from my winter writing pack and a YouTube video on how to build a snowman to help her students with their snowman writing! Teaching and learning about snow can be a bit tricky when you live in sunny Florida!

winter activities
In January, my literacy stations are full of winter activities! This picture is from last year with some winter write the room fun and my winter sight word match up game. Like I said, living in Florida and learning about winter can be interesting. I try to do lots of winter activities throughout the day so my students can understand winter as much as possible.

There are over 40 printables for reading, writing, and math in my winter print and go pack! This math page helped my kiddos last year with number order to 50. Writing numbers can see be difficult for some of my kiddos this time of year, so this page lets them cut and glue the missing numbers.

Head on over and check out my winter activities! If you like what you see, grab some TODAY at 20% off!!

Books for a Snowy Day

Winter is coming and that means snowy days are, too.  When the weather forecasts snow we reach for our gloves, hats, scarfs and some of our favorite snowy day books.  Here are some of our favorite reads for those snowy days during the winter months.

Snow Is Falling by Franklyn M. Branley | Find out all of the good and bad things that snow brings with the author's scientific take on snow.

The Story of Snow by Mark Cassino | This book is a must-have for all those science lovers out there.  When you want to know the science behind snow and how it is created...this is the book for you!

Mouse's First Snow by Lauren Thompson | Little learners all around will enjoy the fun story of Mouse's first time playing and enjoying the snow.   Read this book and follow up with a personal or fictional narrative writing about playing in the snow.

The Itsy Bitsy Snowman by Jeffrey Burton | Combine music and reading with this snowy twist on the "Itsy Bitsy Spider".  Your learners will enjoy the images and story as you compare this story to the old nursery rhyme favorite.

The Snowy Day  by Ezra Jack Keats | When you think of a snowy day book this classic probably comes to mind.  Peter and his fun day in the snow is a must read and can be followed up by many fun activities.

Snowballs by Lois Ehlert | Ehlert's books always have the most amazing illustrations and this book is no different. Explore snow and all the creations you can make by reading this book with your learners.

I hope that you are able to enjoy one or more of these books with your little ones.  Head to the library to grab these snowy day books or collect them for your own library collection in time for the winter months.  Now it's your turn, what are some of your favorite snowy day books?

Winter Art Idea

Hi Everyone, it's Emily from Emmy Mac's Class.
A while back I posted about how I got my students to create a tree. Click HERE to check out the post.

Today I'm bringing you an entirely different way to make a tree! This is a really easy activity for your students to make and it turns out amazing!

I was inspired by these amazing birch trees by Wee Folk Art. Click HERE or on the picture to see the pin.

I'm not lucky enough to have watercolour paper at my school, so we just used cartridge paper. I also made my pages slightly larger.

I took a large sheet of cartridge paper and cut it in half the long way.

My first graders taped the paper to their drying rack. Which stops the paper from curling and makes it super easy to tidy up.

Wee Folk Art uses painters tape but, I just used regular masking tape. We used two different widths of tape. I also showed the students how to rip small pieces off.

The students taped their trees to the paper.

Because we had used up all of the blue watercolour paint. we brainstormed different colours that the sky could be. The students decided on purples and blacks. The students then painted the background.

Once they had finished painting, we immediately peeled off the tape. SInce, we weren't using painter's tape I was afraid the tape would rip the paper. But, it was fine!

We decided as a class to leave the trees blank (not add the little black birch tree marks). Sometimes Firsties get a little carried away with small details. :)

We also didn't use the kosher salt. But the kids were super excited with how they turned out.

I hope your students have as much fun as mine did creating their trees.

Thanks for stopping by!
