Hi y'all! Lauren here from A Teachable Teacher!
I don't know about you, but in my first grade classroom, we have officially introduced subtraction! After months of building number sense and addition concepts, sometimes it is hard to "change gears." We've been using manipulatives galore, including ten frame mats and whole part-part diagrams. (Click on the names of the mats, these are FREE on TPT thanks to Cuddle Bugs Teaching!)
My class this year is extremely fond of music and videos, so we love listening to "Subtract With a Pirate" by Harry Kindergarten.

I was just at a professional development conference where they discussed the importance of spiral review. They claimed that students with high achievement scores practice learned skills continuously. In fact, the speaker claimed, "Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent." I'm not the biggest fan of our math curriculum, so I do A LOT of supplementing. Even though we are learning subtraction strategies, I want my students to continue practicing addition as well. We made this Fact Family Turkey Craft last week when we learned about using addition to help us subtract.
This week, we will be working on addition and subtraction simultaneously as we work to become "Super Solvers!"
(My students swoon over anything super hero themed!)
These engaging worksheets require students to cut, sort and paste addition and subtraction sentences, spin & solve, and roll & solve.

How do you practice addition and subtraction in your classroom?
Love this Lauren! Thanks :)
